There was a strange moment, driving through the Kalahari, long after sunset. The desert was so dark that, driving, I kept becoming convinced that I was speeding through a tunnel of trees. One of those long French, country avenues, where the branches overhang the road and form a roof, blocking out the light. Sometimes, on the long, flat road, it felt like this tunnel was climbing. And sometimes descending. But always stretching ahead, further and further. The illusion was so strong that I found the only way to break it was to look right or left. Where, out of the blaze of the headlights, the sky was a solid wall of stars. So dense that every solitary, desert tree seemed a crisp, black cut out, from a screen of otherwise unbroken light.

Photographed in Chobe, Botswana in October 2019.
