High Roller
I first started looking for birds so that I would have something to write to my grandmother in the postcards I sent her. Dozens of them. In the last years of her life. Once she was too old to travel herself. Once she was restricted to exercising her irrepressible curiosity in quieter ways. Not that I’ve ever been much good at it. Not like she was. Though this Lilac-Breasted Roller made it easy. Alert. Staring at me. Both of us curious of each other. Just for a moment. Across the divide.
